Today we will discuss the importance of self myofascial release (SMR) or to foam roll and the benefits of it. SMR is a stretching technique that focuses on the muscle tissue of the body. By applying GENTLE force to an adhesion or knot, the muscle fibers are altered from a bundled position (or knot) to a straightened alignment. Basically, it releases unwanted muscle tension. An important note on the proper way to apply this pressure is to find that tender spot and sustain the pressure for a MINIMUM of 30 seconds. So if you're just rolling up and down like I see most people in the gym doing, you aren't really doing much. It can be done before or after your work out but primarily should be done before your stretching routine.
The benefits of SMR include:
*Correction of muscle imbalances* (to figure out your imbalances consult with one of our trainers)
*Muscle relaxation* (improves joint range of motion)
*Improved neuromuscular efficiency
*Reduced soreness and improved tissue recovery*
Simply put, if you aren't implementing SMR into your routine, you are severely limiting your body's full functional capabilities.
